Sarawak Cuisine (Part 1)

Assalam n good evening to all..this time, I'd like to write a special entry about the list of foods in Sarawak...most of this foods will never seen in other place outside Sarawak..although it were categories in tradition food, but some people claims that the foods is not origin in Sarawak, but it's came from Indonesia..for example nasi ayam penyet..that's confusing because that nasi is clearly uncategories in our tradition food, but peoples always saying it's our local food..whatever lah, the most important thing is nasi ayam penyet is excluded in my list..



I don't know why Sarawakian always craving for our local food..it just makanan kampung, not modern or western foods..sometimes my head's spinning when i think about that continuously..and i experienced it during my studies in Malacca..that's the facts about our food, our local food that always be the greatest food..i liked this feeling tho =)))

My favourite Sarawak food is mee kolok..previously it was called as mee sapi..take note sapi is referred as lembu..but now it's best known as mee kolok..it is one of the common food found in Kuching and you can see it everywhere in Kuching..frankly, it is hard to find mee kolok in Semenanjung..the only place selling mee kolok that i knew is in Wangsamaju, close to Jaya Jusco..

There are 2 types of mee kolok available; mee kolok goreng or regular mee kolok (soup)..now, the price of mee kolok per bowl is RM3.50 in most stall around Kuching..previosly it only cost RM2.50..but i don't care, janji ho liaooooooooo :D

Laksa Sarawak is another famous hawker food in Sarawak..it's different from laksa Penang or laksa Johor where both dishes, i mean the sause is made from isi ikan (if i not mistaken, ikan kembung)..But laksa Sarawak sause is made from allspice that result in bau wangi (allspice)..It has a base of sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, lemon grass and coconut milk, topped with omelette strips, chicken strips, prawns, fresh coriander and optionally lime..ingredients such as bean sprouts, (sliced) fried tofu or other seafood are not traditional but are sometimes added...ini pun ho liaooo ooooo =)

Besides Mee Kolok and Laksa Sarawak, bubur pedas is one of the favourite local food..although it named as 'pedas', but it doesn't mean it's hot..in the other words, it was called as Sarawak Mixed Vegetable..the taste is quite unique because it was made of mix spices (bumbu)..they must have vegetables such as Midin (red fern), young corns, long beans and black fungus..other vegetables are added according to individual's preference...beef, chicken or prawns are added to complement the vegetables..for optional ingredient, peoples are always mixed it with kulit sapi..I know it's sound disgusted, but it really nice..

FYI, bubur pedas usually served as a dishes during fasting..we called it 'sungkey' or 'berbuka puasa'..this is my favourite dishes during bersungkey..you can easily get this in bazaar ramadhan during puasa..

Now, I'm going to write about another sarawakian dish called ayam pansoh or manok pansoh..what the hell is that? It is the best known as Iban dishes..Manoh pansoh is very unique which features chicken and lemongrass covered with tapioca leaves cooked in a bamboo log over an open fire similar to the way lemang is cooked..it's not an ordinary chicken in used, but it's actually ayam kampung..this natural way of cooking seals in the flavours and produces astonishingly tender chicken with a gravy perfumed with lemongrass and bamboo..

  1. the date you posted this entry is my birthday hehe.. i miss mee kolok huhu this is the only food i ate during my trip,1 whole week everyday mee kolok hehe...its hard to find it here(semenanjung)
